2nd April is known as World Autism Day and the month of April World Autism Month. In this post, we would try to sensitize and inform you about this broad category of different disorders.

What Is Autism?

Autism Speaks, the advocacy group of this disorder, defines Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as “a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication.” So, there is no single type of Autism but different variations of it.

There are many subtypes such as Asperger Syndrome, and all of these subtypes are influenced by both environmental factors and genetics. With each disorder, there comes a unique set of challenges and strengths. The severity of the disorder can also vary.

For example, while one person with this order might require support through his or her life, another person can live entirely independently.
